Prof Shan R. Baker is an internationally renowned leader in the field of Reconstructive and Cosmetic Facial Plastic Surgery. He is an acclaimed teacher with an international reputation and has lectured extensively all over the globe.

 

Prof Shan R. Baker, B.A, M.D, M.S, ABMS graduated from Drake University in 1967 and completed his medical education from the University of Iowa in 1971. He then obtained his M.S degree from the University of Iowa in 1977. He then trained as a Resident in General Surgery, University of California, San Diego from 1971 to 1973 and as a Resident in Otolaryngology and Maxillofacial Surgery, University of Iowa from 1973 to 1977. He was appointed as Faculty, University of Michigan Medical School in 1977 and has worked there since then. He was appointed as Professor, Section of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Department of Otolaryngology, University of Michigan, and Facial Plastic Surgery Fellowship Program Director in 1989 and holds the position to this day.

 

His specific expertise includes facial soft tissue and nasal reconstruction and he has authored more than 75 chapters in textbooks dealing with facial plastic surgery. He is the author/editor Local Flaps in Facial Reconstruction, 3rd Edition, Elsevier 2014’ and ‘Principles of Nasal Reconstruction, 2nd Edition, Springer 2011’, two internationally acclaimed reference books in reconstructive facial plastic surgery. He is the current/past Editorial Board Member for nine peer reviewed scientific journals.

 

He is a Member of American Board of Otolaryngology (ABMS), American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and American Board of Cosmetic Surgery. He is a Past President of the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (2006-2009) and American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (2001-2002).

 

He was the Chairman of the 10th International Symposium on Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (May 2010) and Program Chairman of the 7th International Symposium on Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (June 1998).

 

He was presented the William K. Wright Award for service in education and leadership, and the Larry D. Schoenrock Award for service by the ABFPRS at the AAFPRS Fall Meetings, Toronto, 2006. The Dean of the University of Michigan Medical School presented him with the Lifetime Achievement Award in October 2012.

Dr. Ellis is Chair and a Professor of Surgery in the Department of Oral and maxillofacial Surgery, having joined the faculty at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio in 2010. He came from The University of Michigan where he went to dental school and trained in oral and maxillofacial surgery prior to joining their OMS faculty. From 1988 until 2010, he was the director of the UT Southwestern/Parkland OMS residency in Dallas.

 

Dr. Ellis’ clinical interests are in maxillofacial traumatology, dentofacial deformities, and dental implantology. In addition to chairing the department and supervising the residents, he maintains an intramural practice. His research interest in the 1980s was in stability of surgical correction of dentofacial deformities by orthognathic surgery. In the 1990s, his research has involved the functional aspects of orthognathic surgery. Since moving to Texas, he has also performed clinical investigations into the outcomes after treatment of facial fractures by various techniques. He has authored over 100 scientific articles and two books. In 1997 he received the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS) Research Recognition Award for his research endeavors.

 

Dr. Ellis is active nationally and internationally in the specialty of oral and maxillofacial surgery.  He is the past President of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He has been on the Editorial Board of The Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery for several years. He is also on the editorial boards of the International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, The Spanish Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, The Journal of Craniomaxillofacial Trauma, The Chinese Journal of Practical Stomatology, and Archives of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He was on the editorial board of the British Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. In addition, Dr. Ellis has served on several committees of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. In 2004, he was elected to Fellowship in the Royal College of Surgeons of England.

Mr Sandeep Uppal graduated from University of Delhi, India in 1990. He completed his residency in Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery from University of Delhi, India in 1995. Subsequently he trained and qualified as a Specialist in Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery in the UK. He is a Fellow of both the Royal College of Surgeons of England and Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.

 

Mr Uppal served a one-year fellowship in Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery conducted by the European Academy of Facial Plastic Surgery. He then completed the certification process of the International and European Boards of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He was awarded the Claus D. Walter Award for Academic Excellence by the International Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in 2012. He has also served a one-year fellowship in Advanced Rhinology and Endoscopic Anterior Skull Base Surgery conducted by the Royal College of Surgeons of England.

 

Mr Uppal’s research and clinical interests have resulted in numerous publications in peer reviewed international journals as well as presentations at various international courses, workshops and conferences. He was awarded a PhD by the University of Leeds, UK in 2012. He is actively involved in teaching and examining undergraduate and postgraduate medical students. He serves as a Director on the Governing Council of Pan Asia Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

Dr Yong-ju Jang, MD, PhD is Professor at the Department of Otolaryngology at the Asan Medical Center located in the University of Ulsan College of Medicine in Seoul, Korea.

He is the immediate past president of the Korean Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and currently also serving as the Vice-president of Pan-Asian Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He is on the editorial board as member for JAMA facial plastic Surgery,  Facial Plastic Surgery and Auris Nasus Larynx.

Dr Jang has written two textbooks on rhinoplasty, and contributed chapters to various rhinoplasty textbooks. He has published more than 40 scientific papers on rhinoplasty in a number of international journals and was an invited speaker on rhinoplasty in more than 60 international conferences held in the world.

Mr Ullas Raghavan, FRCS(ORL-HNS) received his basic medical degree and postgraduate MS (ENT) degree from India. He became a Fellow of The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and Glasgow in 1999.

 

He had higher surgical training at Queen’s Medical Centre, University of Nottingham, Derby Royal Infirmary and Leicester Royal Infirmary, University of Leicester. In 2005 he received full accreditation from the Specialist Advisory Committee in Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and was awarded his Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training by the Specialist Training Authority of the Medical Royal Colleges. He was awarded a Fellowship by the European Academy of Facial Plastic Surgery in 2004 and received advanced specialist training as a clinical fellow in Facial Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery from renowned centers in France, Germany, Switzerland, Netherlands and USA.

 

He has passed the examination conducted by the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery as a European candidate. He is also the recipient of a travelling Fellowship by the Royal College of Surgeons of Glasgow for advanced training in Endoscopic Sinus Surgery from Jekei University, Japan. Mr Ullas Raghavan has given numerous presentations at national and international meetings on the topic of Facial Plastic Surgery and is a Faculty at many national and international workshops. He has published more than 35 peer-reviewed papers and written book chapters including 2 chapters in ‘Scott –Brown’. In 2012, he was awarded with a Health Manpower Development Plan award by SingHealth to pursue further training in Facial Trauma, where he spent 1 year in Switzerland as a Clinical Fellow at Inselspital Bern University Hospital, during which he also obtained the degree of Doctor Medicinae Dentium.

Dr Soong is involved with graduate teaching of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residents in the SingHealth Duke-NUS Oral Health Academic Clinical Programme, as a Clinical Lecturer at the NUS Faculty of Dentistry, and is a Dental Advisor with the Healthcare Finance Division, Ministry of Health.

Dr Eugene Poh

Shortly after completing his Masters in Oral and maxillofacial surgery, Dr Eugene Poh was awarded a Higher Manpower Development Program sponsorship for advanced training at the renowned Shanghai Ninth People’s Hospital to specialize in the management of oral cancer, salivary gland diseases and the reconstruction of bony and soft tissue defects of the face and mouth. Dr Poh has also written and published several scientific articles in various international journals and has been invited for several talks to the public and medical/dental profession. Dr Tan is a registered ENT practitioner subspecializing in the field of Facial Plastics Surgery. After completing his ENT training, he spent 1 year full time in Shimmian Rhinoplasty Clinic in Seoul, South Korea. Shimmian Rhinoplasty Clinic is a high volume rhinoplasty specialist centre. During his time there, Dr Tan performed several hundreds of rhinoplasties and facial bone surgeries on Korean and International patients.

Upon his return, Dr Tan served as a Consultant in the Facial Plastics Service of Khoo Teck Puat Hospital ENT Department, serving many patients in need of rhinoplasties for breathing and cosmetic problems. Dr Tan left KTPH to start The Rhinoplasty Clinic to devote more time and energy and to focus more on his passion that is Rhinoplasty.

Dr Tan advocates using autologous (from own body) materials in rhinoplasties as he believes this is the safer, more natural and lasting option. He also feels the nose is not just about looking good, but functionally it has to perform well too. In this respect, his foundation in ENT gives him valuable insights to retaining or improving the functional aspect of the nose when he performs his rhinoplasties.

Dr Livia Teo is a Consultant in the Oculoplastic sub-specialty division at SNEC. She is also a member of the Core Faculty in the Training and Education Department, where she is involved in planning medical student and resident teaching. She also serves as a Section Leader in the Joint Commission International committee responsible for maintaining quality standards in the hospital, as well as serving as the Department Representative in the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee. She was awarded the Singapore Health Quality Service Award (2015).

A graduate of The National University of Singapore, she was consistently in the top quartile of her cohort and, among other achievements, received recognition by being placed on the Dean’s List and being awarded the Mekie Surgery and Dermatology prizes in the final examinations. Continuing with her graduate medical studies at the same University, she obtained the degrees of MRCSEd and M.Med. in Ophthalmology in 2009, while undergoing Residency training at SNEC. She was also appointed Chief Resident in 2009. In 2012, she obtained Fellowships from both The Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh) and Academy of Medicine (Singapore), and for her excellent performance in the Specialists’ Exit examination, she won medals in each of the categories Oculoplastic & Adnexal Disease and Cornea & Refractive Surgery.

Dr Livia completed her training in Oculoplastics in Singapore in 2013 and was awarded the Ministry of Health (MOH) Health Manpower Development Plan postgraduate scholarship in 2014 to pursue further training overseas. She was a fellow at Harvard Medical School’s Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary in Boston and at Severance Hospital, Yonsei University Healthcare System in Seoul, South Korea. The opportunity to train at these renowned institutions greatly enhanced her capabilities, particularly in enabling her to subspecialize in pediatric and adult ptosis and related eyelid conditions, ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgery of the face and orbits, and lacrimal surgery. As part of the General Cataract and Comprehensive Ophthalmology Department, Dr Livia also practices general ophthalmology and performs cataract surgery.

In research, she continues to be active and has attended and presented at several overseas conferences including the annual Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology meeting; World Ophthalmology Congress; Asia Pacific Ophthalmology Congress ; and European Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Congress. With a keen and focused interest in Oculoplastics related research, to date, she has published nine papers in several established/peer-reviewed Ophthalmology journals.

Dr Shantha Amrith is a Senior Consultant Eye Surgeon / Oculoplastic Surgeon, National University Hospital and a Clinical Associate Professor under National University of Singapore.

After two short fellowships in Sydney Eye Hospital, Australia and University of Cincinnati Hospitals, USA in Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, she has been an Oculoplastic (Eye Plastic) specialist since 1989, with over 20 years of experience.

She has vast experience in managing a wide variety of patients with various lid, lacrimal and orbital pathologies and injuries. She has also done a fair number of cosmetic surgeries for sagging eyebrows and baggy upper and lower eyelids. She is experienced in using the latest image guidance system (IGS) for reconstructing orbital fractures following facial trauma.

Dr Amrith has published several articles in notable journals. Her landmark study is on tear outflow physiology. She has ongoing research interests in thyroid eye disease, Asian perspective in eyelid and lacrimal diseases and trauma reconstruction. She has reviewed several journal articles for international ophthalmology journals.

She is active in teaching/supervising resident trainees. She has trained many fellows in oculoplastic surgery from various countries such as Syria, Malaysia, Thailand and Philippines. She has gone on teaching missions to Myamar. She gives regular lectures to undergraduates and teaches them in clinics as well. She is involved in post-graduate examinations as an examiner locally as well as overseas.

Dr Amrith has been awarded the “APAO Achievement Award” in 2011. APAO is the Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology with thousands of members from the Asia-Pacific region. She was a founding member and treasurer for 2 years of the Asia-Pacific Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. She has been invited as a speaker in several international meetings.

Dr Danny Tan was awarded the Health Manpower Development Programme Scholarship to advance his skill in the field of Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) surgery. He spent one year in Karolinska Institute (KI), Sweden, under the guidance of Professor Anders Holmlund, one of the pioneers in the field of TMJ surgery and arthroscopy. During his stint in KI, he was trained in TMJ arthroscopy and the various types of TMJ surgery.
